What you need to know about heat pump water heaters.

How does a heat pump water heater work?
Unlike traditional electric water heaters that generate heat, heat pump water heaters (also known as hybrid electric water heaters) extract heat from the surrounding environment and transfer it into the water inside a tank.
This process delivers hot water up to five times more efficiently than a conventional gas, electric resistance or propane water heater.

Find the right heat pump water heater for your home.
A member of the Quality Contractor Network can help you determine if a heat pump water heater is right for your home. Typically, clearance requirements include a minimum of 6” on all sides and on top of the unit. Adequate air space, often 700 to 1,000 cubic feet, is also necessary. Specific requirements may vary by manufacturer and model.

Get the most out of your new water heater.
Water heating accounts for approximately 18% of your home’s energy use. To maximize efficiency, insulate your hot water pipes, set your water heater to 120° F and install it in a warm, well-ventilated area.

What’s the Uniform Energy Factor?
The Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) is the U.S. Department of Energy’s standard for measuring water heater efficiency. The rating tells you how efficiently a water heater converts energy into hot water. The higher the UEF ratings, the more efficient the water heater — which translates to more savings. ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heaters typically have a UEF of 3.3 to 4.1.
