BENEFITS

A more efficient way to heat and cool your home.

Geothermal heat pumps take advantage of steady underground temperatures — typically 50° F to 60° F year-round — to heat and cool your home efficiently.

Save up to 70% on heating and cooling.

You can save about 70% on heating costs in the winter and 50% on cooling in the summer when compared to a traditional HVAC system.

Enjoy a longer system lifespan.

The underground components can last over 50 years, while the indoor heat pump typically has a 25-year lifespan.

Minimal maintenance and lower repair costs.

Geothermal systems require less maintenance and have fewer components than conventional systems, making it a solid choice for reliability.

Reduce energy consumption.

Systems that aren’t properly maintained can be less energy efficient and cost more to operate. Tune-ups help optimize your system to make sure it’s running as efficiently as possible.

How do geothermal heat pumps work?

A geothermal heat pump works by transferring heat to or from the ground surrounding your home and using it to heat and cool the inside of your home.

What is a geothermal heat pump?

A geothermal heat pump is an energy-efficient heating and cooling system that uses the relatively stable ground or water temperatures to efficiently heat and cool your home. Instead of creating heat, the system transfers heat between your home and the ground.

How does a geothermal heat pump work?

A geothermal heat pump uses underground pipes, called a loop, to transfer heat. In winter, the system pulls heat from the ground or water and brings it into your home. In summer, it reverses the process, moving heat from your home into the ground, pond or lake.

How much can a geothermal heat pump save me on energy costs?

A geothermal heat pump can cut heating and cooling energy costs by approximately 50%-70% compared with conventional fossil-fuel systems. Actual savings depend on factors such as your home’s size, insulation, existing HVAC system, energy use and the geothermal system installed.

Does a geothermal heat pump require digging?

Yes. Installing the ground loop generally requires excavation or drilling. The amount and type of work depend on your property, soil conditions and the geothermal system design. Be sure to work with a member of the Quality Contractor Network!

Can I install a geothermal heat pump if I have a small yard?

Possibly. Different ground-loop configurations can accommodate different properties. Your contractor can determine whether your property has enough space for a ground loop system.

Can geothermal heat pumps be installed on existing homes?

Yes. Although they’re typically associated with new construction, geothermal heat pumps aren’t limited to new builds! A contractor can evaluate your existing property to determine whether a geothermal heat pump is a practical upgrade.

What’s the difference between a mini split, an air source heat pump, a dual fuel heat pump and a central air conditioner?

Yes! TVA EnergyRight and participating local power companies offer a $1,500 rebate on systems installed by qualified contractors in the TVA Quality Contractor Network.
