What you need to know about hybrid electric water heaters.

What is a hybrid electric water heater and how does it work?
Unlike traditional electric water heaters that generate heat, hybrid electric water heaters extract heat from the surrounding environment and transfer it into the water inside a tank. This process delivers hot water up to five times more efficiently than a conventional gas, electric resistance or propane water heater.

What’s the Uniform Energy Factor?
The Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) is the U.S. Department of Energy’s standard for measuring water heater efficiency. The rating tells you how efficiently a water heater converts energy into hot water. The higher the UEF ratings, the more efficient the water heater — which translates to more savings. ENERGY STAR certified hybrid electric water heaters typically have a UEF of 3.3 to 4.1.
Benefits of hybrid electric water heaters.
Find the right hybrid electric water heater for your home.
A member of the Quality Contractor Network can help you determine if a hybrid electric heat pump is right for your home. Typically, clearance requirements include a minimum of 6” on all sides and on top of the unit. Adequate air space, often 700 to 1,000 cubic feet, is also necessary. Specific requirements may vary by manufacturer and model.

Get the most out of your new water heater.
Water heating accounts for approximately 18% of your home’s energy use. To maximize efficiency, insulate your hot water pipes, set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and install it in a warm, well-ventilated area.
