Is it time to replace your heating and cooling equipment?

If your heating, ventilation and air conditioning HVAC equipment is more than 10 years old, struggles to keep your home comfortable or needs frequent repairs, it may be time to replace it. Replacing an older system with a ductless mini split can help reduce your energy use — and your monthly bills — while giving you more precise control over your home’s comfort.

An ENERGY STAR certified mini split heat pump uses up to 60% less energy than standard home electric radiators.

What you need to know about ductless mini split heat pumps.

What is a ductless mini split and how does it work?

Like a dual fuel or air source heat pump, a mini split heat pump transfers heat from one place to another. Mini splits consist of an external unit and one or more head units inside your home. The outside system extracts heat from the air, even when it’s cold outside. The system works in reverse for quiet, efficient air conditioning in the summer.

What factors affect mini split performance?

Since mini-splits don’t lose energy through ducts, they’re already more efficient — but pairing them with other energy upgrades can boost performance and savings. To get the most out of a new mini split, however, you’ll want to make sure your entire home is energy efficient. Insulate ceilings and walls to recommended R-values and air-seal your home.

What are some of the benefits of a mini split heat pump?

Ductless systems offer flexibility, efficiency and comfort — especially in homes that don’t have existing ductwork or in areas that are hard to heat and cool. Some additional benefits of mini split systems include:

  • Quiet, high efficiency cooling.

  • Heating and cooling in one device.

  • Easy installation.

Is a mini split right for your home?

Mini splits are a great option for home with electric baseboard, furnace, radiant, or wall heaters. Plus you’ll get the added benefit of cooling in the summer! They’re also a good option for older homes without existing duct work, additional or outbuildings, or spaces adjacent to unconditioned spaces.

How is heat pump energy efficiency rated?

The efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps is measured using the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER2) for cooling and Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF2) for heating.

Understanding SEER2 ratings.

  • Higher SEER2 ratings indicate better cooling efficiency and use less electricity to cool your home.

  • Higher HSPF2 ratings mean the heat pump is more efficient at heating, helping you save on winter heating costs.

  • The minimum SEER2 rating for heat pumps in our southeastern region is 15.
