Windows FAQs
What kind of windows should I purchase?
Start by talking to a TVA-vetted contractor from our Quality Contractor Network. They can help guide you through options based on your needs and budget. ENERGY STAR® windows will have been independently certified to perform at levels that meet or exceed U.S. EPA energy efficiency guidelines.
How is window energy efficiency rated?
Windows are rated by U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The lower the U-factor, the greater the insulating value of the window and the more heat you retain indoors during the winter months. A lower SHGC means less solar heat will pass through the glass, which comes in handy during summers in the south. This can significantly reduce your air conditioning costs. So, spending more for what’s called “low-emissivity glass” or “low-e” glass is usually worth the extra price. It reflects or absorbs heat in the form of infrared light, improving both the U-factor and the SHGC.
My budget is tight. What are my options?
Energy efficient windows are much more the standard today rather than a plus-up, making them more affordable than they’ve ever been. We’re happy to review all your options with you, including adding storm windows to existing single-pane windows. They’ll still keep outside air at bay which will help you control your heating and cooling costs.
