We take the guesswork out of hiring a contractor. All TVA EnergyRight rebate-eligible home energy upgrades must be completed by TVA-vetted, licensed and insured contractors from our Quality Contractor Network.

Frequently asked questions

All about rebates

How do I know which rebate is right for my home?

The best place to start is by consulting a contractor from the TVA EnergyRight Quality Contractor Network. If you’ve got an upgrade in mind, like replacing an HVAC system, a TVA-vetted contractor can assess your home’s heating and cooling needs and make recommendations based on your budget, energy efficiency goals, and your home’s heating and cooling needs.

If you’re undecided about whether to pursue one type of upgrade over another, say water heating or new windows, an easy place to start is with our free DIY Home Energy Assessment. You’ll answer questions about your home’s energy efficiency and receive a customized report detailing where repairs or replacements could make the biggest difference to your energy use and energy bill.

We also offer an in-person Home Energy Evaluation in partnership with participating local power companies. Your evaluation will be completed by a TVA-certified Home Energy Advisor who will provide you with a prioritized list of home energy upgrades, from DIY options to professional installations.

Our customer service representatives can talk through your options with you. Reach TVA EnergyRight’s Customer Support line at 1-855-237-2673.

Is there a limit to how many rebates I can redeem?

You are welcome to use multiple rebates, as long as they’re for different upgrade categories or multiple products from the same category. For instance, if you’re interested in a new HVAC system, air sealing, and insulation, you could claim rebates for each of those categories. Or, if your home has multiple HVAC units or water heaters, you could claim a rebate on each unit or appliance upgrade. Otherwise, you can only claim one rebate per upgrade. You wouldn’t, for example, be able to claim two rebates on one HVAC system. Rebates are only for residential properties you own or rent.

How soon can I get my rebate?

Once the installation of your project is complete, the contractor has 30 days to submit your rebate to TVA EnergyRight. Once processed, you’ll receive an email asking you to confirm the installation details and claim your rebate. You have 60 days from the first email to claim your rebate. After 60 days, the claim is forfeited if it hasn’t been redeemed. You can expect to receive your rebate within 4-6 weeks of completing the claim process.

Can I choose how I get my rebate?

No, not at this time. All rebates are submitted in the form of a paper check mailed to your home.

Can I hire any contractor I want?

All of our rebate-eligible home energy services or projects must be completed by members of the TVA EnergyRight Quality Contractor Network. Our contractor network is free to access and contains hundreds of options across the TVA service region. All members of the Quality Contractor Network are vetted by TVA, licensed, insured, and trained to meet TVA’s project quality standards. Search the network, read ratings and reviews from actual past customers, and contact any contractors you’re interested in.

Can I finance my home energy upgrade and still get a rebate?

Yes. If you qualify for financing, you can still take advantage of our home energy rebates, as long as the financed project qualifies for a rebate.

See if you qualify for financing.

Can I get TVA EnergyRight rebates and federal energy tax credits?

TVA EnergyRight home energy rebates are exclusive to our local power company partners and their customers, which means they can be combined with other energy rebate or tax credit programs. It’s important to note, though, that TVA EnergyRight and our local power company partners do not offer tax advice. You’ll want to consult a tax professional to see if your home energy upgrades are eligible for federal tax credits. And don’t forget to ask your contractor about any eligible manufacturer rebates.

When can I expect to start seeing savings on my energy bill?

Most energy efficiency upgrades should start saving you money immediately. Major upgrades like a new HVAC system or heat pump water heater will have a bigger impact on your monthly bills than others. Even if you don’t notice a significant change in your bill right away, you may experience the benefits of increased comfort or a more balanced temperature in your home.

I rent, can I use home energy rebates?

Yes, but you will need your landlord’s permission to participate. They’ll need to consent to TVA EnergyRight’s program guidelines, and they will be the ones who receive the rebate.

Even with a rebate and financing, I’m not sure I can afford a home energy upgrade? Do you have other types of financial assistance?

Make sure you look into TVA EnergyRight’s Home Uplift Program. We provide an average of $12,000 in free home energy improvements to income-eligible customers of participating local power companies. These improvements can save you hundreds of dollars on your energy bill.

We understand how stressful keeping up with energy bills can become. If you’re struggling with your bill payments, we encourage you to explore the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps income-eligible households pay for their home energy bills.

In many cases, high energy bills are a result of home energy inefficiencies. If you think that may be the case in your situation, take TVA EnergyRight’s free DIY Home Energy Assessment so you can begin to learn how your home uses (and loses) energy. If you uncover some areas that could use upgrading, you may be eligible for home energy upgrade assistance through your state’s Weatherization Assistance Program.

What is the Quality Contractor Network?

The Quality Contractor Network gives customers of participating local power companies access to hundreds of licensed and insured contractors trained to meet TVA’s quality guidelines. Search the network, read ratings and reviews from actual past customers, and contact any contractors you’re interested in.

Why do I have to use a contractor from the Quality Contractor Network?

All about energy efficiency

What is the yellow EnergyGuide label I see on home appliances?

If you’ve ever walked around an appliance, electronics or home improvement store, you’ve probably noticed a yellow label attached to different home appliances and electronics. This yellow label, or the EnergyGuide label, breaks down how much energy an appliance uses and compares it to the energy use of similar appliances. The label also gives an estimate of the appliance’s annual energy cost, based on typical use and a national average energy price.

What does it mean if an appliance has an ENERGY STAR label?

If an appliance has an ENERGY STAR label (it’s usually a small blue sticker), it means it has met the energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Products with the ENERGY STAR label can help you identify high-efficiency models quickly. Some higher efficiency appliances may cost more at the outset to purchase but will save you more money over time on your energy bill and decrease your carbon footprint.
