What is Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)?

Our number one priority is your privacy. We want to make sure it’s you (and only you) accessing your account. That’s why we use MFA and authenticator apps to verify your identity through multiple pieces of “evidence.” A hacker, for example, might be able to guess your password, but it’d be pretty hard for them to break into an app on your phone or fake your fingerprint.

What is an authenticator app? Which one should I use?

An authenticator app provides you with a unique “token” (or verification code) to enter the MEA website. It’s an extra step, but it’s the best way to protect your information. If you don’t know which app to use, we recommend Microsoft Authenticator. It’s simple and trustworthy. But you’re welcome to use another app of your choice.

What are recovery codes and why do I need them?

Recovery codes are a secure way to regain access to your MEA account if you ever lose (or accidentally destroy) your device. These codes are 16 digits, with optional spaces. We’ve provided five of them for you—and each one is unique to you. Save these to your desktop or better yet, print them out (yes, on actual paper). That way, you’ll never be locked out of your account.

How do I find my account number?

Your account number is typically listed in the upper right- or left-hand corner of your utility bill. This is the easiest way to track it down. However, if you don’t have access to a recent bill, you can also call your local power company and ask for your account number, or find it through their website.
